Marks Needed to Pass Calculator
Enter what you have scored so far and the marks still up for grabs, and find out exactly what you need on the remaining exam to pass — or to hit a target.
Stop Guessing What You Need
"What do I need to pass?" is the question that runs on a loop in your head before an exam. This marks needed to pass calculator answers it with a single number. Tell it the marks you have already locked in (internals, earlier tests, midterms), the marks the remaining exam is worth, and your passing percentage — and it tells you the minimum you have to score, whether it is comfortably doable, and whether passing is even still on the table.
Set an optional target above the pass mark too, if you are aiming higher than just scraping through. Everything runs locally in your browser, with nothing saved.
The Maths, in Plain Terms
Your grand total is everything counted so far plus the remaining exam. To pass, your final marks need to reach the passing percentage of that grand total:
Marks needed on exam = (Pass% × Grand total) − Marks already scored
If you have 32 out of 40 so far and the exam is worth 60 (grand total 100), passing at 40% needs 40 marks total — you already have 32, so you only need 8 out of 60 on the exam. That is the kind of number that turns dread into relief.
Reading the Result
- "You've already passed." Your banked marks alone clear the line. Show up, do your best, and protect your grade.
- A reachable number. Aim a margin above it — a couple of tricky questions should not be the difference between pass and fail.
- "Not possible." Even full marks on the exam will not reach the pass mark. Talk to your faculty early about re-assessment, improvement exams, or extra credit.
This tool is marks-based. If your course is structured by weighted percentages instead (e.g. the final is "worth 40%"), the Final Grade Calculator is the right one. To combine internal and exam components, use the Internal Marks Calculator.

The calculator shows you have secured a pass and need zero further marks — though a strong exam still lifts your final grade.
Even a perfect exam would not reach the pass mark. The tool shows the highest overall percentage still achievable so you can plan next steps with your teacher.
